No matter where you are in this country, it is essential to scout out a state fair near you this summer! Everything you encounter is the epitome of what America is all about, down to the fried and greasy food, farmers showing off their most prized possessions, whether it be their livestock or produce, upbeat music, and the rides that make you regret consuming the fried and greasy food. Here is a list of state fair locations you need to visit if you find yourself road tripping across the country, whether it be a stop or the ultimate end destination!
State Fair of Texas | September 28 - October 31
Everything’s bigger in Texas, right? This state of mind is completely appropriate in regards to way they throw a state fair. They have an iconic 55-foot-tall cowboy state named Big Tex and a 212 foot ferris wheel, known to be the tallest in North America! Known as the deep-fried pioneers, they constantly offer quirky additions that will make you question your current state of health. Innovative concoctions such as the Funnel Cake Bacon Queso Burger, deep-fried chicken noodle soup, and deep-fried Froot Loops are only a few options of what this state fair has to offer!
Wisconsin State Fair | August 2 - August 12
All Cheeseheads rejoice, this is your place to be! As the state known as America’s Dairyland due to being of one of the nation’s leading producer, it is no surprise that nothing can beat their cheeses. Cheese curds are an essential when it comes to your typical fair food, but nothing can beat the quality that comes from Wisconsin!
The Big E Fair | September 14 - September 30
Known as the “biggest event on the East Coast,” this fair represents all six states of the New England area located in Massachusetts. Fried butter balls, Ultimate Cowboy Nachos, and the BBQ brisket sundae are just a few of their staples that you need to try, but their trademark desert, Big E Cream Puffs, is what people keep coming back more for since 2002!
Great New York State Fair | August 22 - September 3
As you can see, quality state fairs don’t need to be reserved to just America’s Heartland of the Midwest. The Great New York State Fair is a festival located on Onondaga Lake where there are the usual rides, food, and what sets this fair apart from the rest, the 800-pound butter sculptures and drone film festivals! While experiencing the vast variety of entertainment, the dozens of food trucks provide samples as little at $3, so you don’t have to worry about going hungry!
San Diego County Fair | June 13 - July 4
Now that we talked about the East Coast, I have to show the West Coast some love! Don’t be fooled, this fair has a lot to offer, despite not being officially recognized as a “state” fair within California. There are plenty of separate wine, beer, cocktail festivals within the fair itself, so there is something for everyone. Despite the healthy stigma California gets, expect to eat the complete opposite such as fried fish kabobs, kettle corn with M&Ms, and deep-fried filet mignon to name a few.
Iowa State Fair | August 22 - September 3
The Iowa State Fair state has been a Des Moines tradition since 1854, and we can definitely see why! This state fair, in particular, is known for the livestock competitions, the iconic butter cow sculpture, and putting every unhealthy on a stick. The variety of what you can find on a stick include apple pie (on a stick), sausage and pancakes (on a stick), and deep-fried brownies (on a stick), and the list goes on! For those who want to opt for a healthy option, but don’t want to miss out on the experience, can resort to a salad on a stick, or even a hard-boiled eggs on a stick. The more portable, the better right?
Minnesota State Fair | August 23 - September 3
Last, but certainly not least, Minnesota State Fair is ranked as the best state fair in the nation and exceeds past Texas when it comes to having the most options of fried food available throughout. The lineup they have performing on the Grandstand Stage this year includes big names such as Niall Horan, Sugarland, and Earth, Wind & Fire to name a few. Aside from the entertainment, the food is the main attraction that get more creative every year. Check out the new addition of the Rainbow Cloud Roll that includes three scoops of ice cream sprinkled with fruity cereal and wrapped in a pillow of cotton candy. Perfect for any sweet tooth out there!
