Wifi vS Cellular Data: What's the Difference?

Aug 7, 2018 11:00:00 AM / by DishForMyRV

Wifi and cellular data are usually associated with one another, and on occasion, can be confused as being the same thing, when in reality, they are quite different. The most important feature they share is that they are essential for keeping us connected in this fast-pace, technologically dominated world we live in. Knowing the differences between the two will help you become an expert on what exactly you need to stay connected on the go!

Here are the 3 main differences you need to understand.

1. Cellular data and WiFi are set up differently

Cellular data is provided by mobile carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.), as opposed to WiFi being offered by Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

2. How these services are provided play a big role as to where it can be accessed

Cellular data tends to cover larger areas such as cities, towns, etc., where as WiFi is always location based, since it only covers small areas such as cafes, airports, homes, etc. The amount of data provided by cellular data is limited since the plans provided by the carrier only cover a certain period of time, in comparison to WiFi that is usually unlimited. This restriction plays a part in how each form is used.

3. Consider Security

Using your cellular data to check personal emails, bank statements, or anything pertaining to important data or information is usually the safest bet. This isn't to say WiFi cannot be reliable, but certain networks are more secure than others. WiFi security in your home, for example, is as safe as you make it, whereas in a coffee shop or somewhere public the network security is unknown. This leaves the potential risk of someone else on that same WiFi connection accessing your data.

How Can I Improve my connections?

Either way, both cellular data and WiFi have their own individual purpose for specific uses but contribute to one goal. DISHForMyRV provides products that can boost both cellular signal and WiFi when you are out and about in need of instant connection or constant connection.

The Winegard ConnecT 2.0 4G2 improves speeds in remote locations where WiFi is nonexistent or very weak. It expands your WiFi coverage to receive signal inside your RV from farther away, making it more powerful than a smartphone or hotspot device.

You can finally travel worry-free knowing that staying in touch with the world will no longer be an issue!
